The first episode manages to fit in satire from South Africa about the visibility of queer people, coverage of bloggers' take on an upcoming election in Mexico (in Spanish) and clips from Jamaica, Israel/Palestine, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. Set to music from Creative Commons label Magnatune, the whole thing fits in 17 fast paced minutes! It's hosted by the very charming Georgia Popplewell, from the Carribian Free Radio podcast (an Adam Curry favorite).

The show reminds me in of a more grass-roots, web 2.0 version of the Global Shortwave Report, a fantastic, long running weekly 30 minute compilation of international shortwave news in English.

Global Voices recently received funding from Reuters. Its primary function is to aggregate content from bloggers all around the world. The project has long published interesting interviews with people from around the world, but this newest foray into the news and culture serialized audio space wil be interesting to watch. Many Global Voices participants are aspiring mass audience journalists as well, so whether new mainstream media stars emerge from this space or whether it thrives as a niche media project will help make the history of Web 2.0's impact on media.

Found via David Weinberger.<h6 style="clear: both;

Highlights include:

168,000 bloggers, commercial publishers and podcasters useFeedBurner

These users publish more than a quarter million feeds, recieving over 60 million feed requestsper day

The aggregate subscriber base is more than 11 million

Podcast feeds (those thatcontain a media enclosure) represent just under 20% of all FeedBurner feeds and this percentage is consistent with themore than 1,000 new feeds created every day at feedburner.com.

FeedBurner recently surpassed a major milestone of 44,000 podcast feeds under management which, according to the CIA World Factbook, exceeds the total numberof radio stations worldwide.

Podcast circulation is consistently growing nearly 20% permonth.

There are more than 1.6 million aggregate subscribers to FeedBurner-managed podcasts, and this number hasmore than doubled in the past six months.

While iTunes is the clear favorite for podcast subscribers, ahealthy 43% of the market listens (or watches) their favorite podcasts using other applications.

Anotherpromising indicator of the success of podcasting is its comparison to another media technology shift that received alot of hype in its early days: The DVD. Back in 2000, the DVD format, just 3 years old at the time, was declared the most successful product launch inconsumer electronics history, outselling the VCR five to one. Using these statistics as a benchmark, in less thantwo years, the number of podcasts available online is tenfold that of DVD titles in nearly half the time. In fact, atthe 18-month mark for DVDs, there were fewer than 3,000 DVD titles available, and an install base of under 1.5m.

FeedBurner Ad Network will be expanded to supportpodcasts and other rich media feeds later this year.

The company predicts that "before the end of theyear, FeedBurner will likely manage well over 100,000 podcasts representing upwards of 5 millionsubscribers."

Her Bloxpert interviews are far tooinfrequent for me, only when she's headed to a tech conference. But her interview with Doc Searls last month is very worth listeningto. Doc talks about everything from Attention vs. Intention and the changing patterns of innovation to therelationship between 60's culture and today's web tech. Very interesting, and I swear I'm not usually a huge DocSearls fan.

Speaking of Doc Searls, he was absent from themost recent Gilmor Gang podcast. So were my favorite contributors, Mike Arrington of Tech Crunch and JonUdell of Infoworld. Perhaps they aren't as essential as I'd grown to think, though, because the newest episode isparticularly good. The discussion of the Forresterreport that 1% of connected households in the US report regularly listening to podcasts is the best part. Itstarts at about 6:00 in and ends around the fifteen minute mark or so. The whole thing is worth listening to,though, despite what the host may say.<h6 style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; The podcast admin gets an email notification, decides if the comment is acceptable, andif it is then it is automatically added to the RSS feed along with the podcast episodes. Looks pretty cool. The service uses a Grazr box to display the comment as well.
CommentCasting

I hit error messages more than once.

My browser recording got cut off on the beginningand end, though I've only tried it once so far.

I'd sure like a direct link to the MP3 file up there inthat iframe player. I presume, for example, that the file won't be delivered as an enclosure in this RSS feed asI have the file inserted now.

There's a couple of pages that seem disconnected. At one point itlooked like I could only "add to a blog" in blogger.com, but at another point I got this nice little iframecode you see displayed above. I imagine that means to publish automatically, which would be rad. I'd liketo do that on Word Press.

The company blog takes pride in their international users, but it surewould be nice to have an 800 number for people in the developing world to call. Maybe this is totally unrealisticand Skype recording is the way to do it. The blog is stoked about a user from Ghana, but only certain kinds offolks in Ghana are going to want to drop $5 per month for premium membership. I guess that's just how things workand I should go take it up with the UN or something to plunk down the money for an 800 number podcast recordingsystem.

All in all, though - I'd say this is a pretty awesome service. Very usable, notintimidating. As others have pointed out, they have a business model, which seems to be more than you can say forOdeo. Evoca could probably use more chicken icons though.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sponsored by: Userplane Apps: Live communication applications powering the world's leading online communities.

PRWeb offering podcast interviews to support press releases

It's been available for a month now, but Ijust discovered this interesting service over at PRWeb. If you're in their $200 level servicetrack, they'll do a 5 to 7 minute interview with you concerning the press releases you put out through their companyand they'll promote the interview around the web.

I'll be interested to see how many of these we startseeing around the podosphere and whether it ends up worth it for the company's clients. This is the kind of thingthat underlines the much discussed need for metrics in podcast listeners. Sounds like a good idea to me,though. Found via Next LevelPartner.
<h6 style="clear: both; today the company offers many more related services - including videohosting and delivery. Found out a number of interesting things. First, the company is in the process ofrebranding and will soon be referred to as Hipcast - to better reflect their offerings beyond audio and blogs. Second, they are expanding operations into Japan with Castella.jp.
